What We Do

The Friends of Shawnee supports the PPFF mission locally by developing and/or supporting programs and events that celebrate Shawnee State Park.  We hope to encourage more people to use this wonderful local resource.

These events include: Fireworks on the Lake, Art in the Park and Kids' Fishing Derbies and more.  (Look for new events like movie night, concerts and fun walk/run events to come!)

We also work to promote the Outdoor Activities and Programs planned by Park Naturalists and in support of the Park Manager and Rangers and to educate the public about the many opportunities available at Shawnee State Park.

Check back often for updates or visit our Facebook page for the latest information.

Dawn to Dusk

Dawn to Dusk

Photographer John Soulnier captured this beautiful sunset moment near the boat launch. Shawnee State Park is open from dawn to dusk.

Fireworks on the Lake

Fireworks on the Lake

The Friends of Shawnee are proud to present our signature annual event: Fireworks on the Lake, a special night to enjoy the park after dark. Always held on Independence Day weekend (but not on the 4th) - the fireworks are launched from the breast of the dam. The event is FREE but donations are welcome to help the Friends of Shawnee cover the cost of this great community event. The 2016 fireworks are scheduled for Saturday, July 2nd at dusk (approx. 10pm.)

Eagles at Shawnee

Eagles at Shawnee

Shawnee State Park is home to at least one family of eagles, which have been seen regularly over the last few years. See if you can spot one of these majestic raptors on your next visit to the park!

Art in the Park

Art in the Park

Local artists captured the spirit of Shawnee for a wonderful outdoor-themed exhibit. The park beach house was transformed into a beautiful art gallery featuring more than 100 works of art: paintings, photography, sculpture, mixed media, jewelry and more. Much of the art was for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Friends of Shawnee programs. Look for Art in the Park to return in 2016, opening for the Fireworks on July 2nd and closing Labor Day weekend.

Goose Fence

Goose Fence

This goose fence was added to the park in 2015 to keep the intrusive geese out of the swimming area. It has worked, keeping the beach area cleaner and keeping the geese safe from human touch.

Raccoon Message

This mother raccoon has started looking for food during the day and even approaches park guests. Please don't feed her - she needs to find food on her own so she can feed her family when park guests leave. Thank you!

Common game species are smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, muskellunge, pickerel, catfish, crappie, yellow perch, bluegill, sunfish, sucker, bullhead and carp. Canadian Geese

Shawnee State Park is home to many geese, who love the lake and raise their young here until it's time to fly south for the winter. Enjoy watching them, but please don't touch or feed the geese.
